GLCS conducts a training course each year for new members.
A panel of current GLCS members assesses both
the written applications and the applicants themselves at an
informal interview. Successful applicants are invited to join the
training program.
Becoming a counsellor offers you a rich and rewarding opportunity to help our community.
Training as a counsellor allows you to learn new personal and professional skills. There is nothing as satisfying and fulfilling as helping someone through a difficult time. You also gain a better understanding of yourself through the skills our training provides.
A training course is required before any volunteer begins working with us. The course usually starts in February or March and is run over approximately 10 weeks
- typically one night a week. The course covers a range of issues such as:
- basic communication skills
-
ethics
- cultural considerations
- health and identity issues.
The core components of the course are run by experienced and qualified trainers. At the successful completion of the course, participants
may undertake further training to qualify for the TAFE Certificate III in Community Services.
